Paper Reality - Keijsers Koning Gallery, Dallas



At my solo exhibition Paper Reality at Keijsers Koning in Dallas US I showed a selection of my signature photographs that explore the perception of reality, light, shadow and form. It was a combination of my photographs of hand made collages of photographs of the sky and some still lives.

Popel’s photographs are driven by finding the parameters of each medium used and pushing it past its confinement. It can be seen as an ongoing analysis of perception. Collaged layers of photographs of skies form the base for her photographs and in some of her works small clay sculptures allude to a sense of space through color and light. The viewer can see the fibers of the layers in paper. This honesty of the material allows the viewer to see beyond its inherent nature and appreciate where the forms take you.
In this exhibition we see two series come together as they address and deal with the theatrics of light. There are depictions of interior and light coming through windows, while the other series has still lifes built out of paper sets and clay flowers. The beauty is in the simplicity of the material that react to the light and space, allowing the viewer to question the perception of reality.
